Road trip to Meghalaya: The perfect introduction to North-East. With November making way for winter, doesn’t a road trip to the abode of clouds sounds like an enthralling idea? Yes, you got that right, I am, of course talking about Meghalaya here! A place where one can dive in the lap of nature directly and make memories of a lifetime. Well, there is a reason its capital city, Shillong is famously known as the “Scotland of the East”. From scenic mountains and lush green pine forests to the awe-inspiring lakes and oh-so-beautiful waterfalls, Shillong has everything that makes this hill station nature’s favorite. And, if that’s not enough, a road trip to Meghalaya with Just Wravel also makes way for exotic, short itineraries every now and then. Excited? We have planned an impeccable road trip to Meghalaya commencing from 18th November to 24th November. 7 days amidst clouds, nature, and serenity. Could it get any more awesome? Certainly not.

And, hey! do you know what the cherry on the cake is? Since there are no direct flights and rail services between Delhi and Shillong, the flight/train needs to be boarded for Delhi to Guwahati. So, yes, this road trip covers Guwahati too. Isn’t that an added bonus? The beautiful riverine port city of Assam lying in the realms of Shillong Plateau and Brahmaputra river is famous for its rich wildlife. And, who wouldn’t want to explore it?

So, while you are already smiling on thinking about the warm memoirs Meghalaya would induce you with; let me give you a little sneak peek of this whole road trip. Here’s a look at the itineraries that we are going to cover.

Day 1: Arrival at Guwahati followed by sightseeing.

Once you reach Guwahati airport/railway station, the Just Wravel representative will receive and take you to the hotel. We have got bikes for all the bike enthusiasts, covering this road trip on bikes. For, other fellow Wravelers, we always have cabs. Once in the hotel, after a little rest and freshening up, we would head to sightseeing so that you can make the most out of its grandeur beauty. Beginning from Kamakhya temple, lying atop Nilanchal hills, the sightseeing at Guwahati would cover the Assam state museum, where you can witness the rich and unique heritage of the Assam culture. Also, you get to explore the captivating wildlife at the State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, the largest zoo of the North-East before coming back to the hotel in evening. The dinner and stay would, of course, be in Guwahati itself.

Day 2: Travel all the way from Guwahati to Shillong.

So, finally comes the day where you will unwind yourself through our road trip to Meghalaya. 100 km and a 4-hour journey to Shillong to explore our very own “Scotland of the East”. And, there’s this Umium lake on the way to Shillong that you can visit en route. This scenic reservoir attracts a lot of tourists every year. The day would end by checking in the hotel, followed by an overnight stay and dinner.

Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunjee- Make way for the wettest place on Earth.

We would start early morning after the breakfast to reach the always-so-rainy Cherrapunjee. Enroute, you get to explore the magnificent three step Elephanta falls, located at a close proximity to the Shillong peak, which also has some breathtaking and mesmerizing views to capture. The beautiful waterfall Nohkalikai is also enroute, lying at a distance of 7km from Cherrapunji. Not only is it the fifth highest waterfall in India but, the most photogenic one too. Further, you can also visit Mawsmai caves, an extended, long cave which is a one of its kind of adventure. This day would mark its end with dinner and overnight stay as usual before we proceed further on our journey.

Day 4: Cherrapunjee to Mawlynnong: Welcome to the cleanest village in Asia!

 The day would start by driving all the way to Dawki river, lying close to the border of Bangladesh with some picturesque views and clouds to get lost in. In fact, the Dawki-Tamabil border between Bangladesh and India is one of the friendliest international borders you would ever see. After Dawki, our destination would certainly be  Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia, where exploring the 100 year old living root bridge would definitely be an experience of a lifetime. A sumptuous dinner along with an overnight stay here would make way for another exciting day.

Day 5: Mawlynnong to Shillong: Back to the Scotland of East.

So, while you interact and make new friendships with the locals of Mawlynnong, don’t forget to buy the intricately carved bamboo goodies as souvenirs before heading back to Shillong. We would take a few occasional breaks enroute to witness the beauty of a plethora of waterfalls. Once back in Shillong by evening, relax with an overnight stay and dinner, of course.

Day 6: Shillong to Guwahati: The journey nears its final destination.

The morning would begin visiting the Don Bosco museum, considered one of the finest museums in the whole of Asia. It would be followed by going to the Ward’s lake before bidding adieu to Shillong. You can also stop at Kalakshetra enroute, a sound and light show depicting the rich Assamese culture. Once back to Guwahati, you can sit back and rewind the memories while this road trip reaches its final day.

Day 7: A little more of Guwahati sightseeing and the final departure.

The last day of the trip will mark its end with visits to various temples like Tirupati Balaji Temple, Nabagraha Temple etc. You can even explore the local attraction along with the market as the evening comes and you are dropped back to the Guwahati airport/railway station.
